The M4 motorway heading westbound between Bristol and Swindon remains closed this morning after a serious collision involving a car and a van yesterday evening. The accident, which occurred around 8:05 pm near Junction 16 (Swindon) and Junction 17 (Chippenham), resulted in several individuals requiring hospital treatment.
Emergency services, including Wiltshire Police, ambulance teams, fire crews, and National Highways Traffic Officers, responded swiftly. Two air ambulances were deployed to the scene, with eastbound traffic temporarily held to accommodate medical assistance. Traffic resumed around 10:30 pm; however, the westbound carriageway has remained closed due to ongoing complex investigation work.
Wiltshire Police continue to conduct thorough inquiries into the cause of the collision, and the motorway closure is expected to persist for a considerable duration. The AA has confirmed the closure from junction 16 (A3102 Swindon Road) to junction 17 (A350 Chippenham), advising motorists to follow designated diversion routes marked by solid diamond symbols.
