A critical section of the M4 motorway remains closed westbound between Junction 16 (Swindon) and Junction 17 (Chippenham) following a severe collision involving a car and a van. The crash occurred at approximately 8:05 pm on Saturday, leaving multiple individuals requiring hospital treatment.
Emergency services, including Wiltshire Police, ambulance, fire crews, and National Highways Traffic Officers, responded promptly. Two air ambulances attended the scene, necessitating traffic to be temporarily held on the eastbound carriageway. Traffic was allowed to move again after 10:30 pm.
Due to the complex nature of the investigation, carried out by Wiltshire Police, the motorway closure is expected to persist for an extended period. The AA has confirmed the closure stretches from J16 (A3102 Swindon Road) to J17 (A350) and highlighted ongoing detours.
