The M4 motorway heading into the South West remains closed westbound between Junction 16 near Swindon and Junction 17 near Chippenham, more than 12 hours after a serious collision involving a car and a van on Saturday evening. The crash, which occurred around 8:05 pm, resulted in several individuals being hospitalized.
Emergency services, including Wiltshire Police, ambulance teams, fire crews, and National Highways Traffic Officers, responded promptly to the scene. Two air ambulances attended the incident, causing temporary traffic holds on the eastbound carriageway before traffic resumed shortly after 10:30 pm.
Due to the complex nature of the investigation, Wiltshire Police have announced that the westbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for an extended period. Drivers are urged to follow diversions clearly marked with a solid diamond symbol. Vehicles under 4.2 meters in height should take a specified route, while taller vehicles are advised to use an alternative diversion path.
