Love Your Garden Guests Defend Alan Titchmarsh Makeover Amid Viewer Backlash

Alan Titchmarsh, beloved TV gardener known for his work on Ground Force and ITV’s Love Your Garden, recently found himself at the center of some viewer controversy following a garden makeover episode.

Rob and Margaret Isdale, a couple who have fostered over 150 children, were surprised when their daughter Fiona secretly arranged for Alan and his team to revamp their garden as a special gift. After Rob’s quadruple heart bypass surgery, he had expressed a passing wish for a garden makeover during his recovery. Fiona took it to heart and applied on their behalf.

In 2019, Alan and his team transformed their outdoor space into a charming, Elizabethan-inspired garden reminiscent of The Secret Garden. The design featured a mock monastery wall, weathered brick columns, and a Tudor-style shed—elements that brought a traditional character to the space.

Though some viewers criticized the makeover online, calling it overcrowded with bricks and concrete, Rob and Margaret remain delighted with the results. Rob said, “We’re more than happy with the outcome. The criticism is fake news. Alan and his team did a brilliant job.”

Rob also shared how he personalized the garden after the makeover, converting the shed into his art studio and removing a tree that blocked light to the kitchen window. The couple appreciate the garden’s design, which they feel suits the space well even when untidy.

During the show, Alan expressed admiration for Rob and Margaret’s devotion as foster parents. He hoped the garden would make them feel as cared for as the children they welcome into their home.

When the transformation was revealed, Alan surprised the couple by unveiling the discovery of “ruins of an old abbey” buried within the garden, adding a unique historic touch to the space. Margaret called the find “brilliant,” and Rob shared his heartfelt thanks.

Despite the mixed viewer reactions, Rob and Margaret’s experience with the makeover has been overwhelmingly positive, illustrating how the garden now holds a special meaning beyond its aesthetic, as a place of comfort, creativity, and history.
