Love Island’s ‘Genius’ Water Bottle: The Secret to Burning Fat Without Exercise

As the new season of Love Island heats up, the contestants are once again seen clutching their trademark water bottles throughout the day—whether tackling physical challenges or enduring the scorching Mallorca sun. But these bottles may hold more power than just quenching thirst; they might be key to the stars’ lean, toned bodies.

Professor Franklin Joseph, head of Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, reveals that staying hydrated with a large water bottle can actually help “burn fat without exercise.” He explains, “Many people overlook hydration when trying to lose weight. Keeping a water bottle handy and sipping regularly helps regulate appetite, reduces unnecessary snacking, and keeps your metabolism running efficiently. It’s a true game-changer.”

Water plays a vital role in the body’s fat-burning processes by flushing out waste, reducing bloating, and preventing fatigue. A 2014 study demonstrated that overweight women who drank 500ml of water 30 minutes after each meal lost weight, decreased body fat, and lowered BMI over eight weeks.

Professor Joseph adds, “Even slight dehydration can make you feel tired and snacky, especially in warm weather. Having a bottle on hand like the Islanders do helps maintain hydration and curb cravings.”

Further research from 2014 found that drinking 500ml of cold or room temperature water increased calorie burning by 2-3% within 90 minutes, helping burn an extra 50 to 100 calories daily—small but meaningful when aiming for weight loss.

“For best results,” says Prof Joseph, “start your day with a full bottle of water, ideally enhanced with an electrolyte tablet to boost absorption. Electrolytes replenish minerals lost through sweat and make hydration more effective—especially crucial if you’re dieting or exercising regularly. It’s an effortless, no-tracking solution — no wonder some of TV’s leanest people swear by it.”

How much water you need depends on various factors such as age, body size, temperature, and activity level. The NHS Eatwell Guide suggests aiming for six to eight glasses of fluids daily, including water, low-fat milk, sugar-free drinks, tea, or coffee. You may need more during hot weather or if pregnant, breastfeeding, physically active, or recovering from illness.

In the end, the simplest accessory on Love Island may be their secret weapon for fat burning without the sweat.
