Cheltenham’s iconic pub, The Tavern, has closed its doors, much to the dismay of its loyal patrons. The management team, who took over in December 2024, announced the closure today, describing themselves as “devastated” by circumstances beyond their control.
Only two days prior, The Tavern had announced a temporary closure for refurbishment. However, a recent social media post revealed the pub would remain closed indefinitely. The post read, “It is with heavy hearts that we have to close the doors on this great pub. Since opening a year ago, we worked hard to revive the magic. Thanks to your support, revenue increased by nearly 50% during the year, and The Tavern truly came alive again. Sadly, due to circumstances out of our control, we cannot continue.”
Although there remains hope that The Tavern might reopen in the future, for now, the venue remains shut. The management extended heartfelt thanks to customers, many of whom became close friends, saying, “You all made The Tavern special. It’s been incredible, and we are truly devastated.”

Located in Royal Well Place, The Tavern has been a Cheltenham institution praised for its quality food and warm atmosphere. Reviewers on Tripadvisor gave it a 3.9 “good” rating, highlighting the use of fresh, local produce and a seasonally inspired menu blending European flavors with homegrown quality. Patrons lauded the skilled bar staff and vibrant ambiance.
Described as “everything a classic pub should be,” The Tavern offered a welcoming environment, great food, and a friendly atmosphere perfect for a casual pint or a meal with friends.
Visit Cheltenham hailed The Tavern as “a smart community pub with an excellent selection of beers and fresh British seasonal food,” noting its reputation for friendly, professional service, live music nights, steak specials, and a cozy space for locals to unwind.
News of the closure sparked an outpouring of sadness on social media. Punters expressed their sorrow and appreciation:
Tan Bax: “This is so sad to read. If I’d known it was the end, I would have been there last night. You brought the magic back; don’t give up.”
Jen Kirkwood: “I’m so sorry to hear this. You are definitely one of Cheltenham’s best pubs, and the food was amazing. Hoping to see you again.”
Adrienne Davis: “Oh no! That is awful news, so sad for you.”
Matthew Jago: “Oh, that is gutting.”
The Tavern’s sudden closure is a significant loss to Cheltenham’s community scene, where it will be remembered fondly by many.
