Lloyds to Relocate Cheltenham High Street Branch, Plans Submitted for Grade II-listed Building

Lloyds Banking Group has announced plans to close its iconic Cheltenham High Street branch and relocate to a new site within the town. The move comes as part of a strategy to adapt to changing customer needs and modern banking trends.

The company has submitted proposals to Cheltenham Borough Council seeking permission to remove its branding and cash machines from the Grade II-listed building, a historic structure dating back to 1900. Minor restoration work is planned to return the building’s façade to its original condition as the site is decommissioned.

Despite the closure of this prominent branch, Lloyds reassures customers that a new, refreshed location will open in Cheltenham. While no specific timeline has been announced, the bank is committed to maintaining a strong local presence and will refurbish the new premises to enhance customer experience.

Andrew Booton, chairman of the Cheltenham Civic Society, expressed regret over the closure but highlighted the broader changes impacting town centres. “The speed at which technology and changing consumer habits are reshaping our town centres is undeniable,” he said. Booton also sees potential in repurposing the historic building, suggesting it could become a standout hospitality venue, much like The Ivy restaurant, which once operated as a Lloyds Bank.

“The building’s architectural heritage should be preserved while encouraging uses that bring vitality back to the High Street,” Booton added. The plans will be reviewed by planners with a decision expected by mid-July.

A spokesperson for Lloyds commented: “Our branch is staying in Cheltenham, and we have upcoming refurbishment plans that we look forward to sharing with the community soon.”
