Lloyds Bank to Relocate Cheltenham Town Centre Branch

Lloyds Banking Group has announced plans to close its iconic branch on Cheltenham High Street and move to a new location within the town. The historic Grade II-listed building, dating back to 1900, will have the bank’s branding and cash points removed as part of the relocation process.

The bank has submitted plans to Cheltenham Borough Council to carry out minor facade works aimed at restoring the building’s original appearance once it is decommissioned. While no specific date has been set for the move, Lloyds assures that the branch will remain in Cheltenham, relocating to refreshed and refurbished premises nearby.

Andrew Booton, Chairman of the Cheltenham Civic Society, expressed regret over the closure but emphasized the broader context of rapid changes in retail and banking habits driven by technology. He sees the transition as an opportunity to breathe new life into the historic building, suggesting it could be transformed into an exceptional hospitality or restaurant venue.

Booton pointed to the successful example of The Ivy, a former Lloyds Bank building in Cheltenham that has been reinvented as one of the town’s most popular dining destinations. He urged that any future use of the structure should honor its architectural heritage while enhancing the town centre’s vibrancy and appeal.

The local community is set to await the council’s decision on the planning application, expected by mid-July. Meanwhile, Lloyds continues its commitment to serving Cheltenham residents through its forthcoming refreshed branch.
