Lifelong Friends Reunite at Cheltenham Town as Gerry Oldham Joins Coaching Staff

Gerry Oldham’s return to Cheltenham Town’s staff marks a heartfelt reunion with lifelong friend and manager Steve Cotterill, rekindling a friendship spanning over 50 years. Oldham, now the club’s kit manager, humorously admits that getting used to calling Cotterill ‘gaffer’ will be the biggest adjustment in his new role.

Their shared journey began in childhood, playing youth football together for Chiltern Rovers. Though their paths diverged—Cotterill rising to professional football and Oldham carving out a respected presence in local football—their connection remained strong. After retiring from a manufacturing career, Oldham dipped his toes back into football management and coaching, overseeing Cheltenham Saracens and working at Pure Offices.

A surprise call from Cotterill swiftly changed Oldham’s path. “Within 15 minutes Steve had sold me the club and the job,” Oldham recalls. Supported by his wife Hannah, he handed in his notice and embraced the opportunity to join Cheltenham Town’s backroom team full-time.

The pair’s football history includes playing for Cheltenham Saracens in their teens, participating in teams run by Cotterill’s grandfather, Cyril Thornley—whose support was pivotal during Oldham’s formative years. From grassroots football to coaching roles, Oldham reflects on their shared experiences fondly, celebrating Cotterill’s commitment and professionalism that has only deepened over time.

Oldham’s footballing journey included player-manager duties at St Mark’s, coaching roles within Aston Villa’s academy where his son Jack was signed, and assistant managerial positions at Cinderford Town and Evesham United. Known for his organizational skills and passion for people, Oldham is eager to contribute to Cheltenham Town’s success both on and off the pitch.

As Oldham embraces his role caring for the kit and players, he is energized by the challenge ahead. “I’ve gone from putting up shelves to sitting in the dugout at Swindon Town, and I couldn’t be happier,” he said. His dedication and connection to the club promise to be valuable assets as Cheltenham Town continues its League Two campaign.
