Lidl, the UK’s sixth-largest supermarket chain, has announced an ambitious plan to open more than 50 new stores within the next 12 months, backed by a £600 million investment. This expansion is expected to generate nearly 2,000 new jobs nationwide, boosting local economies and employment opportunities.
Among the new stores set to open this summer are locations in Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire. To support this growth, Lidl will engage with over 150 property partners and agents later this month, seeking new freehold, leasehold, and long leasehold properties across Great Britain.
With over 1,000 stores already operating across the UK and a workforce exceeding 35,000 employees, Lidl continues to strengthen its presence and community impact. Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth. Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future. Above all, it advances our social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone.”

Employment Minister Kate Dearden praised the announcement, stating: “This kind of investment is exactly what we want to see from big employers – creating thousands of good jobs that pay fair wages and boost the standard of living in communities across the country.”
The announcement follows a record-breaking Christmas period for Lidl, which experienced a 10% surge in sales and welcomed nearly 51 million customers during the festive season, underscoring the company’s growing popularity among shoppers.
