Lidl Announces Plans to Open 50 New Stores and Create 2,000 Jobs Across the UK

Lidl has revealed ambitious plans to open over 50 new stores across the UK within the next 12 months, backed by a £600 million investment. This expansion is projected to generate nearly 2,000 new jobs, strengthening the supermarket’s footprint and economic impact nationwide.

Among the new store locations scheduled to open this summer are Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire. To support its growth strategy, Lidl will be hosting more than 150 property partners and agents later this month, aiming to secure freehold, leasehold, or long leasehold sites throughout Great Britain.

Currently operating more than 1,000 stores and employing over 35,000 people across Britain, Lidl’s chief executive, Ryan McDonnell, emphasized the company’s community commitment: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth.”

McDonnell added, “Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and provides British suppliers with the confidence to invest in the future. Above all, it furthers our mission to make affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone.”

Employment Minister Kate Dearden praised Lidl’s investment, stating, “This kind of investment is exactly what we want to see from major employers — creating thousands of good jobs that offer fair wages and improve living standards in communities across the country.”

Lidl’s announcement follows a successful Christmas period marked by a 10% sales increase and nearly 51 million customers shopping during the festive season.
