Liam Kinsella, the experienced midfielder for Cheltenham Town, is expected to leave the club this week, according to reports from Gloucestershire Live. The 29-year-old made a late substitute appearance in last Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Oldham Athletic, which is likely to have been his final game for the Robins.
Manager Steve Cotterill has indicated that several players may exit the club soon in pursuit of new opportunities. “We have to try to be fair to them,” Cotterill said after the match. “It will be their future and I have promised the lads. Some won’t get contracts and they have families and livelihoods, so I will be true to my word.”
In a further move, Cheltenham recently secured 19-year-old West Bromwich Albion prospect Cole Deeming on loan until the end of the season to bolster their midfield options.

Kinsella joined Cheltenham Town from Swindon Town in January 2024 and quickly became a regular fixture, making 89 appearances across all competitions. He played a crucial role during the previous season, captaining the team and making 33 League Two starts along with four substitute appearances. After signing a new one-year contract last summer, Kinsella was a consistent starter until Steve Cotterill took over as manager in late September.
Since Cotterill’s arrival, Kinsella’s playing time has diminished, with only one League Two start in a 1-0 home victory over Bristol Rovers. This change has been largely due to the strong performances of midfielders Ben Stevenson and Luke Young.
Liam Kinsella is the son of former Charlton Athletic and Republic of Ireland midfielder Mark Kinsella. He began his professional career at Walsall, amassing over 200 appearances and earning the Player of the Year award twice before transferring to Swindon Town in 2023. Additionally, he has represented the Republic of Ireland at the Under-21 level.
Cheltenham Town will next face Grimsby Town at home in their upcoming League Two fixture on Saturday, with a 3pm kickoff.
