Cheltenham Town have strengthened their attacking options by signing Leicester City forward Kirsten Otchere on a season-long loan deal. The 19-year-old, who impressed during Leicester’s recent pre-season campaign with three goals, arrives at Whaddon Road eager to gain regular first-team experience.
Otchere caught the eye of Leicester manager Russell Martin this summer, earning praise for his performances before the decision was taken that a loan move would best support his development. To shed more light on the player, Gloucestershire Live spoke with Leicester Mercury’s Foxes reporter Josh Holland, who has closely followed Otchere’s progress.
When asked about Otchere’s playing style, Holland noted that Leicester fans have mainly seen him during this pre-season, which was his first significant opportunity. “He was instructed to play in the role Russell Martin wanted from his centre forward,” Holland explained, “which involved dropping deep to link up with attacking midfielders and wingers, while also having the adaptability to run in behind defenders. For his age and physicality, he’s quite strong and held himself well.”

Holland highlighted Otchere’s work rate and contribution in less glamorous aspects of forward play, emphasising his keen desire to prove himself. Regarding the loan move, Holland added that it was anticipated from the start of the summer, despite Otchere’s positive pre-season displays. “Russell has consistently said he wants three strikers with different qualities. Otchere’s loan means Leicester now seek to sign two new forwards. This move benefits everyone involved.”
Reflecting on Otchere’s goals, Holland described his scoring during friendlies as encouraging, including an especially impressive headed goal against Spanish side Cádiz in La Liga 2. He acknowledged a degree of fortune in some goals but praised Otchere’s movement and finishing overall.
Looking ahead to Otchere’s chances in League Two, Holland expressed confidence in the striker’s ability to adapt and succeed. He cited Leicester’s history of successfully loaning players to the lower tiers and regarded Otchere as an intelligent and well-liked player, with manager Russell Martin among his admirers. Holland even suggested that some commentators believe Otchere could potentially start at League One level in the near future.
“He’s a really intelligent kid, who is very well liked at Leicester and Russell was a big fan.”
