Lauren Holbrook and Ollie Somervell recently experienced an unforgettable milestone as they collected the keys to their brand-new home at David Wilson Homes South West’s Winnycroft development in Matson, Gloucester. However, the day became even more special when Ollie surprised Lauren with a marriage proposal on their doorstep.
Ollie had asked Lauren to “dress nicely” for the occasion, hinting there might be a photographer present. Though Lauren was suspicious, she never expected a proposal. “He popped the question just moments after we got the keys,” Lauren recalled. “It was such a lovely surprise that made the day truly memorable.”
The couple, aged 30 and 38, both work in senior communications roles and chose the Winnycroft development because of its ideal location near their workplaces, beautiful countryside-like surroundings, and stunning views of Painswick Hill. They recently moved from a one-bedroom flat into a spacious three-bedroom Archford home, appreciating features like an expansive kitchen perfect for entertaining and a large garden.

Energy efficiency was a key selling point for Lauren and Ollie, with their new home boasting an impressive A/B energy rating, solar panels, and modern design. “We’ve already hosted a roast dinner for six, and there was plenty of room for everyone,” Lauren shared. Their house also supports their work-from-home lifestyle, offering separate spaces for focus and hobbies, plus accommodations for overnight guests.
Thanks to David Wilson Homes’ Key Worker Deposit Contribution Scheme, Lauren and Ollie were able to secure a five percent deposit and receive financial help with flooring upgrades. “The scheme made all the difference and helped us finally get on the property ladder,” Lauren said gratefully.
The couple praised the guidance of Winnycroft’s sales team, especially sales adviser Millie and mortgage advisor Carole, who made the process smooth and empowering—especially for first-time buyers. They also enjoyed customizing their home’s fixtures and finishes to reflect their personalities.
Now settled in and connecting with new neighbors—including one from Lauren’s netball team—the couple is excited to explore their new community. They also commended the site manager for his ongoing support.
Lauren reflected on their journey: “Having a place to call our own feels amazing. It can feel impossible for young people to enter the housing market, but the support from David Wilson Homes South West made it achievable.”
Louise Ware, Sales Director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, expressed delight at the couple’s engagement and new home: “Helping first-time buyers take that crucial step is something we’re proud to do, and being part of such a meaningful life moment is incredibly rewarding. Our Key Worker Deposit Contribution Scheme is designed to support those serving our communities, and it’s wonderful to see how much it helps.”
Located just minutes from the M5 motorway, Winnycroft is part of a large development featuring 15 acres of open space, playgrounds, a community orchard, and allotments. The development offers show homes and an immersive flythrough experience for potential buyers to explore the future neighborhood.
