Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen Opens Up About Harrowing Near-Death Experience on Netflix Survival Show

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, best known for his work on the 1990s BBC hit Changing Rooms, recently shared an emotional account of a frightening near-death experience while filming the Netflix survival series Celebrity Bear Hunt.

The 60-year-old interior designer embraced the opportunity to step out of his comfort zone by joining the show, which features celebrities facing survival challenges in the Costa Rican jungle, with Bear Grylls as their guide. Hosted by Holly Willoughby, the series pushed contestants to the limit—especially Laurence.

During one dramatic moment, Laurence became trapped beneath a raft, struggling to breathe underwater. It was only thanks to Bear Grylls’ swift rescue that he was pulled to safety. Speaking to Hello! magazine, Laurence described the incident as a “close shave” that left him shaken: “I couldn’t breathe and started passing out. In hindsight, it was even more frightening. I was very emotional telling my wife Jackie about what happened. In my head, I felt like James Bond, but really I’m more like Grandpa Pig.”

The terrifying episode unfolded as celebrities, including Mel B and Ted Lasso’s Kola Bokinni, attempted to unclip supply bags from the raft. When Laurence became trapped, Bear immediately dove in with the crew to rescue him. Afterwards, Laurence experienced chest tightness and was given oxygen to assist with his breathing.

Grateful for Bear’s intervention, Laurence expressed his thanks, calling it a lifesaving moment. Bear Grylls humbly responded on social media: “No, you had it in hand buddy. You’re a true survivor, Laurence!”

Celebrity Bear Hunt premiered on Netflix earlier this year, featuring twelve celebrities braving the jungle while pursued by Bear Grylls. Laurence was the third contestant eliminated, following Leomie Anderson and Boris Becker. Rapper Big Zuu ultimately won the competition, overcoming rivals like Strictly Come Dancing’s Shirley Ballas and Spice Girls’ Mel B.

Despite its intriguing concept, reports indicate that Netflix may not renew the series for a second season.
