Late Arthur Clark Try Secures Vital Gloucester Victory Over Harlequins at The Stoop

Gloucester Rugby pulled off a crucial 26-19 victory against Harlequins at The Twickenham Stoop on Saturday, a significant step forward in the race for next season’s Champions Cup qualification.

The standout moment came seven minutes from the final whistle when Arthur Clark, returning from England squad duties during the Six Nations, powered over to score the decisive try. This late effort capped a strong finish for George Skivington’s side and secured their second Gallagher Premiership win of the season—both of which have been against Harlequins.

Despite trailing by seven points on two occasions, Gloucester’s resilience shone through as they mounted comebacks to claim victory. Harlequins now sit ninth in the league, six points behind Gloucester, who are solidifying their position near the top of the table.

Harlequins struggled significantly in the set-piece department and failed to convert numerous red zone opportunities, even with the return of England playmaker Marcus Smith. Interim head coach Jason Gilmore noted that Smith had “a point to prove” after limited appearances in the Six Nations, but Sunday’s gritty match was not the platform he needed to stake his claim for a fly-half starting role.

An early injury setback for Gloucester came when captain Tomos Williams left the field in the 18th minute with a right shoulder injury, a rare low point in an otherwise encouraging performance.

The first quarter saw an evenly matched contest, with Gloucester’s Jack Clement opening the scoring before Ben Waghorn leveled for Harlequins. Both tries demonstrated the physicality and determination of the players, with solid close-range efforts met by equally resolute defending.

Marcus Smith showed flashes of brilliance but struggled to find consistency until Harlequins’ attack sparked in the 28th minute. Capitalizing on quick ball from a line-out, Smith sprinted over following a pass from captain Alex Dombrandt.

Gloucester responded by dominating scrums and line-outs, despite a temporary setback when openside Lewis Ludlow was sin-binned for a dangerous clear-out. A key momentum shift came when Smith fumbled under pressure midway through the half, allowing Gloucester to capitalize.

Harlequins spent much of the second half in Gloucester territory, but their faltering line-out and failure to convert scoring chances proved costly. A mishandled pass from Rodrigo Isgro set up Gloucester’s Ben Redshaw to sprint over in the corner, widening the visitors’ advantage.

Although Harlequins fought back, Jack Kenningham’s try was quickly answered by a stylish effort from Charlie Atkinson, who also converted to level the score. Gloucester’s command of the set-piece continued as Arthur Clark’s strong line-out finish edged them ahead for good.
