Late Arthur Clark Try Seals Vital Gloucester Victory Over Harlequins

Gloucester Rugby secured a crucial 26-19 victory over Harlequins at The Twickenham Stoop, delivering a significant blow to their rivals in the race for next season’s Champions Cup qualification. Arthur Clark’s powerful try, scored just seven minutes from full time, capped a strong finish by George Skivington’s side and delivered their second Premiership win of the season — both triumphs earned against Harlequins.

Facing a determined Harlequins, who remain in ninth place and now trail Gloucester by six points, the visitors twice overcame a seven-point deficit. Despite the return of England playmaker Marcus Smith, Harlequins struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, notably faltering in red-zone conversions and set-piece battles.

Interim Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore acknowledged Smith’s desire to prove himself after limited Six Nations appearances, yet the match’s scrappy nature limited his impact and failed to resolve the fly-half selection debate.

Gloucester’s day was nearly marred early on by the loss of captain Tomos Williams, who exited after 18 minutes with a shoulder injury. Nevertheless, the visitors demonstrated resilience and composure.

The first quarter was tightly contested, with Gloucester’s Jack Clement opening the scoring. Harlequins responded through Ben Waghorn after finding their rhythm. Smith managed moments of creativity, eventually breaking through in the 28th minute off a slick line-out move to score under the posts.

However, Gloucester’s dominance at the set-piece soon swung momentum their way. Even after Lewis Ludlow received a yellow card, Gloucester won scrum and line-out ball against the head. Harlequins squandered possession with a costly error from Rodrigo Isgro, allowing Ben Redshaw to sprint over in the corner.

Harlequins fought back, restoring their seven-point advantage through a strong forward effort and a try from Jack Kenningham. Yet Gloucester’s response was swift, with Charlie Atkinson crossing and converting to level the score.

The momentum stayed with Gloucester as Clark touched down following another commanding line-out. His try ultimately sealed the win, solidifying Gloucester’s hold on the final Champions Cup qualification spot.
