‘Larger-than-life’ Bill Cracked Jokes Moments Before His Sudden Death

The family of William “Bill” Earle, affectionately known as “Billy Whizz,” have paid tribute to a beloved Gloucestershire man who died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at the age of 56.

Bill began feeling unwell while at work on Tuesday, April 14. Despite his condition, he maintained his trademark humor, joking with paramedics as he called for an ambulance and walked into the emergency vehicle. Tragically, he suffered a fatal heart attack before reaching the hospital.

Known for his “larger-than-life” personality, Bill spent his life helping others. His brother James described him as a man with a heart of gold who was always ready to offer support, advice, or a helping hand regardless of the weather or circumstance. Bill’s wide circle of friends and colleagues quickly expressed their grief and admiration on social media, with his Facebook page flooded with messages honoring his memory.

Bill’s career began as an HGV driver at 21, working for several local hauliers including Ralph Davis, Graham Gilder, and Cotteswold Dairies. His travels took him across Europe and even to Russia, transporting unique cargo ranging from emus and tigers to ammunition. Later, Bill became an agricultural engineer and established a workshop in Tirley, where he spent 15 years assisting people in tackling difficult jobs with his mechanical expertise.

On the day of his passing, Bill was surrounded by colleagues and friends at his workshop, often called “The Yard.” James shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, describing Bill as a brother, mentor, and mechanical engineering genius who left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

With funeral expenses reaching over £4,600 plus additional costs for death certificates, Bill’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs. The response has been overwhelmingly supportive, with more than £4,000 raised so far. Plans are underway for Bill’s funeral on Friday, May 8, at Cheltenham Crematorium.

James expressed deep gratitude for the support received during this difficult time and emphasized how much Bill’s kindness and knowledge touched those around him.
