Lancashire have bolstered their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a hard-fought four-wicket victory against Gloucestershire at Emirates Old Trafford.
Gloucestershire posted a competitive total of 270 runs, led by Cameron Bancroft’s near-century innings of 98. The innings gained extra significance as key player Miles Hammond was absent due to injury, and James Bracey was dismissed early, bowled by Tom Aspinwall after an unfortunate inside edge.
Bancroft’s innings stabilised Gloucestershire’s innings, supported by partnerships of 52 runs with Ollie Price and 43 with Joe Eckland. The key moment came with a substantial 116-run stand for the fourth wicket between Bancroft and captain Jack Taylor, who contributed 75 runs off 69 balls. This partnership was ended abruptly by successive wickets, with Taylor caught superbly one-handed at deep square leg by Marcus Harris off Charlie Barnard’s bowling. Bancroft was also dismissed shortly after, caught down the leg side off Arav Shetty, denying him a seventh List A century.

Lower-order contributions from Joe Phillips and Tommy Boorman added 57 runs for the sixth wicket before Boorman was caught in the final over. The team’s innings was supported by effective bowling from Barnard and George Balderson, who took two wickets each.
Lancashire’s chase got off to a promising start with a 92-run partnership between Matty Hurst, who scored 48, and Keaton Jennings. However, Gloucestershire’s bowlers fought back strongly, taking five wickets for 31 runs over the next 64 balls, reducing Lancashire to 183 for 6. Among those dismissed were Jennings and Harris.
Facing 79 runs needed in the last ten overs, Lancashire captain George Balderson and Arav Shetty staged a remarkable recovery. Despite the pressure, Balderson launched a series of powerful strikes, including two consecutive sixes off Will Williams in the 48th over. Balderson reached his fifty from just 34 balls, and the duo ensured victory with 11 balls to spare, finishing unbeaten on 56 and 36 respectively.
This vital win keeps Lancashire’s campaign on track as they aim for qualification in the one-day competition.
