In a gripping Metro Bank One-Day Cup match at Emirates Old Trafford, Lancashire secured a crucial four-wicket victory over Gloucestershire, bolstering their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. Gloucestershire set a target of 271 runs, largely thanks to an impressive 98 from Cameron Bancroft, who anchored their innings amid early setbacks.
Gloucestershire’s innings faced early challenges with opener James Bracey dismissed for just one, bowled by Tom Aspinwall on the seventh ball. Despite the injury to Miles Hammond, Bancroft forged valuable partnerships, adding 52 runs with Ollie Price and 43 with Joe Eckland. The highlight was a commanding fourth-wicket stand of 116 runs over 20.2 overs between Bancroft and captain Jack Taylor, providing much-needed solidity.
Taylor contributed a fluent 75 off 69 balls, featuring eleven fours and a six, before being caught just inside the boundary by Marcus Harris off Charlie Barnard. Bancroft followed shortly after, falling two runs shy of a century when Matty Hurst caught him leg side off Arav Shetty. Lower order contributions from Joe Phillips and Tommy Boorman added 57 runs for the sixth wicket, with Boorman dismissed for 28 in the final over. Lancashire’s bowlers Barnard and Balderson both claimed two wickets each, finishing with figures of 2 for 59 and 2 for 54 respectively.

Chasing 271, Lancashire got off to a promising start. Matty Hurst and Keaton Jennings put together a 92-run partnership before Hurst was dismissed for 48. Josh Bohannon struck 47 off 42 balls, including three sixes, before falling to Ed Middleton. At 183 for 6, Lancashire appeared vulnerable as Gloucestershire’s bowling tightened, claiming five wickets for just 31 runs in 64 balls. Key dismissals included Jennings, caught at cover for 67, and Marcus Harris, who made 12.
Facing a target of 79 runs from the final ten overs, Lancashire’s captain George Balderson and Arav Shetty staged a remarkable recovery. With 31 needed from the last four overs, Balderson heroically struck consecutive sixes off Will Williams in the 48th over. He reached his unbeaten fifty off 34 balls and went on to finish 56 not out, guiding Lancashire home with 11 balls to spare. Shetty remained unbeaten on 36, carrying Lancashire to a vital win in what was a thrilling conclusion to the match.
