Kittens Dumped Outside Cotswolds Pub Rescued and Rehome with Loving Family

Two vulnerable eight-week-old kittens were cruelly abandoned in a bin outside The Three Horseshoes pub in Asthall, West Oxfordshire, on Boxing Day. Discovered amid rubbish and used nappies, the kittens—brothers—had clipped whiskers and were infested with ticks and fleas when a quick-thinking staff member rescued them.

Taken to Blue Cross’s rehoming centre in Burford, the kittens received medical care and nurturing attention. Initially named Thyme and Morris, they were later renamed Bramble and Pebbles by their new owners, Becky and her partner from Swindon.

Becky shared their journey: “We had been searching for a rescue cat for months. Although we initially wanted an older cat, my partner fell in love with these two instantly. Despite their timid start, they showed curiosity and sweetness. Thanks to Blue Cross’s care and guidance, we knew we could give them a loving home.”

The kittens quickly adapted to their new environment. Bramble, formerly Morris, emerged as the more confident and affectionate sibling, often following the family around and happily lounging with them. Pebbles, formerly Thyme, has blossomed from his initial shyness to enjoy gentle petting and playtime, preferring the quiet comfort of his pedestal bed.

Becky reflected, “I never imagined having kittens, but now I can’t imagine life without them. Watching them grow and trust us has been incredibly rewarding. Both my partner and I are completely in love.”

The Blue Cross charity, which cared for the kittens, reports a rising number of homeless pets needing support. In 2024, cat admissions increased by 9% and dog admissions rose by 18%, many involving animals abandoned by previous owners. The charity helped nearly 30,000 pets last year.

Anouska Ashmead-Bartlett, admissions coordinator at Blue Cross Burford, commented, “Thyme and Morris were understandably fearful upon arrival. Our cattery team dedicated time to build their confidence and restore trust in humans. We are thrilled they have found a loving home.”

The charity urges owners facing difficulties in caring for pets to seek help rather than abandon animals. Daylesford Stays, a local pub company, expressed gratitude, stating, “We are delighted Bramble and Pebbles now have safe, loving homes. Thanks to Blue Cross for their vital work protecting vulnerable animals.”
