King Charles’ Staff Notice Marked Change in Monarch Following Health Scare

Long-serving members of King Charles’ staff have observed a significant change in the monarch’s temperament since he ascended the throne, reveals royal author Robert Jobson.

Having become king just over three years ago, Charles holds the record for the longest heir apparent in UK history. Early in his reign, he was diagnosed with a form of cancer, prompting a discernible shift in his demeanor and daily routine.

In his latest book, The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty of Secrets, Scandal and Survival, Jobson describes how those closest to the king sensed this transformation. “His longer-serving staff have detected a change in their employer, who at times could seem rather cold. Now, he’s become noticeably more emotional,” Jobson notes.

This change is partially attributed to the influence of Dr. Michael Dixon, head of the Royal Medical Household and an advocate of complementary medicine, who took on the role following Queen Elizabeth’s passing. Additionally, Prince William has encouraged his father to slow down and heed medical advice.

In January 2024, King Charles underwent a “corrective procedure” at the London Clinic to address benign prostate enlargement. During this time, Buckingham Palace confirmed a cancer diagnosis unrelated to the prostate condition. The king’s public engagements were paused until April while he recovered and continued cancer treatment.

Since then, Charles has adopted several lifestyle changes. Reportedly, he now includes regular afternoon naps and has reintroduced lunch into his daily regimen—a meal historically skipped—that often features spinach soup. Known for his witty self-awareness, the king often jokes about entering a “worryingly decrepit stage” of life.

Despite these adjustments, the monarch maintains a demanding workload while simultaneously managing his ongoing treatment. Supporting him, Queen Camilla has increased her involvement in royal duties.

In March 2025, Charles was briefly hospitalized due to side effects related to his therapy. The family is further challenged by Princess Kate’s recent revelation of her own cancer diagnosis, following closely on the heels of the king’s health news.

Robert Jobson also discusses the complex dynamic between King Charles and Prince William, noting they generally collaborate well but occasionally face tension. “Both possess fiery tempers, not always easily controlled. Staff often describe working for Charles as ‘treading on eggshells.’”

Jobson recalls an incident in February 2022 when Charles contracted Covid-19 for the second time before becoming king. Confined to Clarence House and unable to travel to Highgrove as planned, he reacted with frustration—allegedly threatening to drive himself despite restrictions. Concerned aides intervened by hiding his car keys, a move that eventually calmed the situation and ensured compliance with government guidelines.

These episodes highlight the pressures faced by King Charles amid his health struggles and the evolving role he now inhabits as monarch navigating personal and public challenges.
