Key Road Near Cheltenham Rail Station to Close One-Way for Several Weeks

A crucial section of Gloucester Road near Cheltenham Spa railway station will be partially closed in one direction for nearly a month to facilitate important electrical upgrades. From July 28 to August 22, the southwest-bound lane will be closed as National Grid undertakes work to relocate an electricity substation at the station.

County Councillor David Willingham (LD, St Mark’s and St Peter’s) commented on the disruption: “Given the road’s proximity to the station and the accompanying risk of congestion, people may need to allow extra time if they are driving to catch a train. Should National Grid manage to complete the work ahead of schedule, it would be greatly appreciated.”

National Grid representatives have committed to completing the project as quickly and safely as possible, with an expected finish date of August 22. They deliberately scheduled the work during the school summer holidays to reduce inconvenience.

A spokesperson for National Grid Electricity Distribution said: “Between July 28 and August 22, we will be carrying out electrical work on Gloucester Road near Cheltenham Spa railway station. This project involves relocating one of our substations to support upgrades at the station.

“To carry out this work safely, a one-way closure will be in place, and clear diversion signs will guide motorists along alternative routes.

“We acknowledge that works like these can be disruptive but have planned them to take place during school holidays to minimise impact. We thank the residents and motorists of Cheltenham for their patience during this essential project.”
