Kent have clinched promotion to Division One of the Rothesay County Championship after an emphatic eight-wicket victory against Gloucestershire at Canterbury. Gloucestershire’s defeat confirmed their position at the bottom of Division Two.
Matt Milnes was instrumental in Kent’s success, taking five wickets for just 33 runs as Gloucestershire were dismissed for 241. Kamran Dhariwal stood out for Gloucestershire with a determined 66 runs. However, by the time Kent began their chase, they were already aware of their promotion due to Northamptonshire’s loss to Middlesex at Lord’s.
In the chase, Kent’s Sam Northeast remained unbeaten on 49 while England international Zak Crawley contributed 44 runs, guiding Kent to a comfortable 120 for 2 to secure the win.

On day three, Kent knew a victory would guarantee second place in the division. Early on, Tom Boorman was given a reprieve when a chance for a catch was missed, with keeper Chris Benjamin deferring to slip fielder Crawley who failed to take it. Nonetheless, both overnight batsmen fell within seven balls; Miles Hammond fell to an edge caught by Tawanda Muyeye for 42, and Boorman was dismissed soon after.
Dhariwal and Daaryoush Ahmed steadied the innings, pushing Gloucestershire into the lead. Ahmed was dismissed lbw for 34 in a decision that appeared to involve an inside edge, and James Bracey, batting with a runner, spooned a catch to mid-on. Gloucestershire reached 150 for 6 at the lunch interval.
Milnes continued his fine bowling, claiming R Sai Kishore caught by Muyeye, who then also caught Che Simmons edge off Dudgeon’s bowling, marking Muyeye’s 27th Championship catch this season.
As Gloucestershire’s innings neared its end, news arrived of Northamptonshire’s defeat, prompting applause among the crowd and easing tension. Matt Taylor added a useful 34 runs to give Gloucestershire some resistance before Dhariwal was caught by Northeast and the innings concluded when Taylor drove to skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond. Gloucestershire set Kent a target of 117 runs.
Kent began strongly with Crawley hitting the first ball of the chase for four off JT Langridge and survived a drop chance shortly after. Langridge did claim Ben Compton lbw for 4. Crawley then played aggressively, with a reverse sweep four, although he was dismissed on the very next ball attempting a slog sweep.
With the target reduced to 12 runs, Northeast hit a six over cow corner off Ollie Price, followed by two fours, securing Kent’s promotion and their eighth victory of the season.
