Kent have earned promotion to Division One of the Rothesay County Championship after an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at Canterbury. Meanwhile, Gloucestershire ended their season at the bottom of Division Two.
The match saw Kent’s Matt Milnes deliver an outstanding bowling performance, taking five wickets for just 33 runs, as Gloucestershire were dismissed for 241 in their innings. Gloucestershire’s Kamran Dhariwal stood out as the top scorer with a resilient 66 runs.
Kent entered the match aware that promotion was within reach. Following Northamptonshire’s defeat to Middlesex at Lord’s, Kent secured their ascent to Division One before even beginning their second innings chase.

During Gloucestershire’s second innings, Kent’s bowling continued to apply pressure. Early on, Tom Boorman survived a crucial dropped catch when Chris Benjamin left an edge for first slip Zak Crawley, who was unable to take the chance. Despite this, Boorman and Miles Hammond were dismissed in quick succession, reducing Gloucestershire to a precarious position.
Dhariwal and Daaryoush Ahmed then combined to push Gloucestershire into a modest lead. Ahmed was ultimately dismissed lbw in a close decision, while James Bracey, batting with a runner, spooned a catch to mid-on. By lunch, Gloucestershire stood at 150 for six wickets.
Milnes then added two more wickets, one via a catch by Tawanda Muyeye at first slip, and Muyeye also took a vital catch off Keith Dudgeon’s bowling. When news arrived that Northamptonshire had lost, applause echoed around the ground, easing Kent’s tension.
Matthew Taylor contributed a valuable 34 runs for Gloucestershire, providing some resistance before Dhariwal was caught at mid-off and Taylor was caught behind, leaving Gloucestershire setting Kent a target of 117 runs.
Kent’s chase began positively, with Zak Crawley hitting four off the first ball. Despite being dropped early on, Crawley scored 44 runs before an aggressive shot resulted in his dismissal. Ben Compton was dismissed lbw early, but Sam Northeast remained steady and unbeaten on 49 runs.
With the target gradually diminishing, Northeast sealed the win with a six over cow corner, followed by consecutive boundaries, confirming Kent’s promotion and their eighth victory of the season.
