Kelsey Grammer Approved to Demolish Historic Cottage in West Country

Renowned actor Kelsey Grammer has been granted permission to demolish a 200-year-old historic cottage in the West Country, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from local residents. The cottage, located in Portishead, near Bristol, has sparked objections from neighbors who have voiced concerns about the loss of historical value, potential damage to the rural environment, and objections to future modern designs.

Despite the objections, the North Somerset Council planning portal confirmed the approval, specifying that the work must be completed before 12 February 2030. Multiple objections highlighted the significance of preserving the cottage, with some expressing dismay at the possibility of demolishing a structure with over 185 years of history.

Outraged objectors have raised issues related to the impact on local amenity, the preservation of heritage, and the disregard for previous planning decisions. The Walton-in-Gordano Parish Council also opposed the demolition, emphasizing the historical importance of the cottage and expressing the need for sensitive and proportionate updates rather than complete demolition.

Grammer’s initial proposal to build a significantly larger extension on the historic cottage was rejected due to concerns about the scale of the development and its impact on the Green Belt. However, the recent decision in favor of demolition has triggered backlash from those advocating for the preservation of historical landmarks.
