Towels often become stiff and rough due to excessive detergent use, air-drying outdoors, or hard water deposits. While some people prefer the texture of coarse towels, many enjoy the luxurious feel of soft and fluffy ones, especially when hosting guests.
Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, reveals that baking soda and white vinegar—two simple household ingredients—are highly effective in reviving towel softness. He explains, “You can use these ingredients separately to transform tough towels into soft, plush ones.”
To use white vinegar, add 250ml directly to the washing machine drum along with your regular liquid detergent, then dry the towels as usual. Despite concerns about vinegar’s strong smell, your towels will not retain any scent after washing.

Baking soda is equally beneficial. Dimitrov recommends mixing eight tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with your laundry detergent before starting the wash cycle. This method helps loosen towel fibers and remove dirt, keeping towels looking and feeling like new.
White vinegar is widely available in supermarkets, often costing just pennies per bottle, and is a popular choice in hotels for maintaining towel quality.
For the best results, wash towels separately from clothing. Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, cautions that washing towels with clothes can transfer bacteria between items. Also, shaking out excess water before drying will help fluff up the towels and boost their absorbency.
By using these simple household ingredients and washing practices, you can extend the life of your towels and keep them soft and fluffy for longer.
