Television presenter Jeremy Clarkson, widely known for his iconic roles on Top Gear, The Grand Tour, and Clarkson’s Farm, turned 66 on April 11, 2024. Over his long career, Clarkson has not only entertained millions but also candidly shared his personal health struggles, giving fans rare insight into his battles with mortality.
In early 2024, while vacationing in the Seychelles, Clarkson experienced a life-threatening cardiac emergency. He described symptoms like clamminess, chest tightness, and pins and needles in his left arm before being rushed to hospital. Doctors discovered blocked arteries and urgently fitted two stents to restore his heart’s blood flow. The medical team warned he had just “days to live” if treatment wasn’t provided immediately. Reflecting on the ordeal, Clarkson said he couldn’t climb a flight of stairs without support and later expressed deep gratitude for the lifesaving care he received at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.
Clarkson has also battled persistent ear problems for over a decade but grew alarmed after learning that his hearing loss increased his risk of dementia. A routine medical exam revealed he had effectively doubled his chance of developing the condition due to untreated hearing issues. Explaining the challenge, he told The Times his brain had to work overtime “trying to fill in the bits of speech it hasn’t been able to hear,” which made everyday memory tasks harder. Following this diagnosis, he began using hearing aids, hopeful they will lessen the strain on his brain.

His frankness extends to his planning for the end of life. Clarkson joked about leaving all his trousers to his shorter former Top Gear co-host, Richard Hammond. He has thoughtfully arranged his funeral, requesting the 23-minute track “Supper’s Ready” by Genesis to be played in full. He reflected on how complicated dying has become today and the importance of making clear arrangements.
Recently, Clarkson underwent surgery to remove a 5cm cyst on his back while staying at a luxury health retreat with his partner Lisa Hogan. The cyst was confirmed benign. Quipping about his preference for the hospital’s operation over the “miserable” health farm, he described the experience humorously as more enjoyable than a diet of juniper berries.
Clarkson also revealed his long battle with nicotine addiction. After quitting smoking nearly a decade ago, he relied heavily on full-strength nicotine gum. However, in 2023 he was warned by doctors that the gum was causing dangerously high blood pressure, posing risks of an “agonising and premature death.” This latest health alert has prompted him to reconsider his reliance on nicotine replacement.
Through these candid updates, Clarkson has given fans an honest look at the fragility of life, the importance of medical vigilance, and the need to confront fears around health head-on. Despite these challenges, his characteristic wit and resilience shine through, affirming his enduring presence both on screen and in public life.
