British farmers are navigating unprecedented challenges this year as relentless heatwaves contribute to what many describe as the “worst harvest within living memory.” Jeremy Clarkson, whose Diddly Squat farm near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, was advised against sowing wheat or barley due to the adverse conditions, sought alternative farming ventures to sustain the land.
Among these new pursuits, Clarkson took to cultivating flax, a crop historically valued for its fibres used in linen textiles and even in manufacturing components for Formula One cars. However, Clarkson soon discovered that growing flax is a far more complex task than anticipated.
In a recent piece for the Sunday Times, he explained the distinctive nature of the crop: unlike typical cereals, flax harvesting entails letting the grain fall to the ground while uprooting the stalks, rather than cutting them. This process requires specialized machinery, which Clarkson colourfully described as resembling “an industrial accident that hasn’t happened yet.”

The mechanical harvesting was only the beginning; significant manual work followed. With most of his agricultural staff engaged elsewhere, Clarkson, along with Lisa and Kaleb Cooper, undertook the labour-intensive task of gathering and bundling stalks by hand. Reflecting on this experience, Clarkson likened the work to a scene out of an Enid Blyton novel.
The physical strain and the impracticality of the endeavour soon tested team dynamics. Clarkson remarked that Kaleb “is not talking to me,” citing frustration over what he called his “harebrained schemes” and his tendency to act without thorough planning.
This latest setback joins a series of unsuccessful attempts by Clarkson to diversify the farm’s initiatives. Previous ventures, such as breeding rabbits, proved unexpectedly vexing. Despite rabbits' reputation for prolific breeding, Clarkson found them challenging to manage, noting their elusive mating behaviours and aggressive nature, which posed particular risks given his health concerns.
Planting herbs was also less fruitful than hoped. Clarkson reported that despite efforts, the farm yielded “a ton of parsley, a handful of coriander and a lot of dead thyme,” marking another disappointment.
Conceding the difficulties, Clarkson described flax as “another Diddly Squat disaster,” underscoring the unpredictable nature of farming in current climatic conditions.
The challenges Clarkson faces are emblematic of wider issues confronting UK agriculture. Charlie Taverner, policy lead at the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, highlighted the pressing reality of climate change on farming, emphasising that while many farmers feel apprehensive, new opportunities are emerging. Certain crops previously unsuited to the UK climate, such as sweet potatoes, sweet peppers, artichokes, and chillies, are becoming viable. Furthermore, staple legumes like chickpeas and lentils might soon be grown domestically as summers grow hotter and drier.
Nevertheless, experts caution that adapting agricultural strategies requires a nuanced understanding of Britain’s shifting climate. Professor Carol Wagstaff, director of Agrifood Futures at the University of Reading, warned that the UK’s climate is not only warming but also becoming more erratic. She stressed it would be “naïve” to assume the UK can cultivate crops typically grown in Spain, given the lack of comparable year-round temperatures and the challenge of wetter winters.
As British farmers like Clarkson adjust to these profound changes, the future of agriculture in the UK will depend on resilience, innovation, and a careful balance between opportunity and caution.
