Jeremy Clarkson has directly responded to fans following viewer complaints about the pace of contestants on his new ITV quiz spin-off, Millionaire Hot Seat. The show debuted on Tuesday, January 13, as a fresh, quicker take on the classic Who Wants To Be a Millionaire format.
In Millionaire Hot Seat, six contestants compete under intense time pressure, answering increasingly difficult questions for a chance to win £1 million. Unlike the original, the jackpot is awarded only to the player holding the hot seat when the clock expires. Contestants have just 15 seconds to answer each question, demanding rapid thinking and swift decision-making.
Ahead of the premiere, Clarkson shared his excitement on social media, describing the show as “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but faster,” and expressed eagerness to see how the new format would be received.

During the first episode, some viewers grew frustrated when contestants appeared to hesitate or chat instead of quickly providing answers. One viewer commented, “Can someone please explain to the contestants that they need to stop nattering and answer the questions as quickly as possible, so frustrating!” Clarkson swiftly replied, “I do. Before the show every time,” confirming that contestants receive clear instructions on the time limits.
The game eliminates players immediately after an incorrect answer, lowers the jackpot amount, and allows each contestant one “pass” to skip a question and potentially return to the hot seat later.
Following Clarkson’s response, fans proposed that allowing a contestant to run out of time might better communicate the urgency of the 15-second rule. Others praised the new format for highlighting the pressure and dynamics of a faster quiz, even while acknowledging its difference from the original show.
Prior to hosting, Clarkson admitted initial hesitation due to his busy schedule but was convinced after watching the Australian version of the show. He likened the format to “a very expensive game of musical chairs,” emphasizing its competitive, fast-paced nature.
Millionaire Hot Seat is scheduled to air weekly on ITV1 and ITVX at 7:30 pm, promising viewers a fresh and thrilling quiz experience hosted by Clarkson.
