Jennifer Saunders, the acclaimed actress and comedian best known for her unforgettable portrayal of Edina Monsoon in Absolutely Fabulous, has chosen a peaceful life away from the celebrity spotlight in Devon. Renowned for her work in French and Saunders, Absolutely Fabulous, and as the voice of the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2, Saunders has carved out a legacy in entertainment that remains influential and beloved.
Now 66, Saunders has appeared in a diverse range of TV shows and films including Friends, Let Them Eat Cake, Minions, and Sing. However, beyond her on-screen success, she enjoys a calm and private lifestyle with her husband, fellow comedian Adrian Edmondson.
Married since 1985, the couple left their hectic London life behind to settle in a charming farmhouse on the outskirts of Dartmoor. In 2002, they sold their London residence for £2.2 million and made the move to Chagford, a picturesque market town in Devon.

Earlier this year, they gained approval to renovate their Grade II-listed Dartmoor home to better suit their needs. Their plans, which included landscaping and converting outbuildings into a pottery hobby space, initially met with some local concerns about the public benefit. Yet, with conditional approval from the planning authority, the renovation work was greenlit. Previously purchased as a holiday home for themselves and their three daughters—Ella, Beattie, and Freya—the farmhouse, complete with five acres and a swimming pool, became their full-time residence.
In a heartfelt interview with the Evening Standard, Saunders shared her affection for the region: “We’ve lived there for many years and I love being surrounded by beautiful countryside and the sense of community that exists in a village.”
Nestled near the River Teign in northeast Dartmoor, Chagford reflects classic Devon charm. The town enjoys a unique microclimate that offers more sunshine and less rain compared to other Dartmoor locations. Its historical landmarks such as St Michael’s Church and the imposing Castle Drogo, overlooking from Drewsteignton, enhance its appeal.
Chagford is a vibrant community featuring independent shops, cozy cafes, art galleries, upscale restaurants, boutique hotels, and welcoming pubs. For nature lovers, the expansive moorlands just beyond the town invite exploration and outdoor activities.
The town’s charm was recognized in 2021 when The Times included Chagford among the best places to live in the UK, praising it as “arty, environmentally minded and hospitable.” However, property in Chagford comes with a premium: in 2023, the average house price was £494,203, with detached homes typically selling for around £805,000, terraced homes for £295,450, and flats averaging £270,000.
Jennifer Saunders’ move to this tranquil West Country haven perfectly embodies her desire for a grounded life amidst nature, far from the hustle of fame.
