Jamie Oliver Seeks Permission to Launch Pop-Up Bakery at Historic Spains Hall

Jamie Oliver is planning to introduce a new culinary venture at his historic Essex residence by transforming a former stable block into a pop-up takeaway bakery. The internationally acclaimed chef has submitted a planning application to Braintree District Council, aiming to repurpose the old stable block for serving freshly baked treats, sandwiches, and coffee throughout August.

If approved, the bakery would operate within the grounds of Spains Hall, a remarkable Grade I listed mansion dating back to around 1570. The estate, located in Finchingfield, Essex, has been home to just three families since the Middle Ages and now also functions as a wedding venue. Oliver purchased the property in 2019 and has since invested in extensive renovations.

The proposal outlines daily opening hours from 9 am to 5 pm, operating on a month-long trial basis. Oliver’s representatives emphasize that this temporary change of use presents an opportunity to trial a small-scale commercial operation in a rural setting without adversely affecting the heritage site, traffic flow, or local amenities.

The bakery would utilize the existing kitchen facilities within the former stable block, and public access would be limited to the main open-plan room and ground floor restrooms. Importantly, the plans require no internal or external alterations to the building, preserving its historic character and the surrounding landscape.

Customer parking will make use of the existing spaces behind the stable block, with additional overflow capacity available if needed. The operation is expected to generate around six new jobs, with deliveries scheduled three times a week.

To date, no objections have been raised by the public, and the council’s decision is pending at an upcoming meeting.

Jamie Oliver, known for his culinary innovation, has personally overseen restoration work at Spains Hall, including repairs to windows, doors, and masonry. The £6 million estate is shared with his wife Jools and their five children. In addition to hosting this new bakery initiative, the property also houses Jamie Oliver’s Cookery School, providing hands-on culinary experiences and showcasing homegrown produce.
