Jamie Oliver Plans Pop-Up Bakery at Historic Spains Hall Estate

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has applied for planning permission to transform a former stable block on the grounds of his historic Essex residence, Spains Hall, into a pop-up takeaway bakery. The venture aims to offer freshly baked treats, sandwiches, and coffee throughout August as a trial, operating daily from 9am to 5pm.

Spains Hall is a distinguished Grade I listed manor dating back to around 1570, located in Finchingfield, Essex. It has long served as a wedding venue and has only been owned by three families since the Middle Ages. Oliver purchased the estate in 2019 and has since invested in restoring its historic features, including repairing windows, doors, and masonry.

The planning application details that the bakery will utilize the existing kitchen within the stable block, with no physical alterations to the building’s interior or exterior required. Access for patrons would be limited to the main open-plan room and available ground-floor toilets. Customers will be able to park using the existing facilities behind the stable block, with space for additional overflow as needed.

According to Oliver’s representatives, the proposed temporary use will not negatively impact the heritage status of the property, nor will it cause traffic, environmental, or amenity concerns. The site’s historic Coach House and Stable Block dates back to the 18th century and was designated as a listed building in 1967.

The bakery is expected to create employment opportunities for six local workers and will have deliveries scheduled three times a week. No public objections have been raised so far, and the local council will review the application at an upcoming meeting.

Jamie Oliver, well-known for his culinary innovations, also hosts cookery experiences at Spains Hall, combining his passion for food with his commitment to preserving the estate’s rich heritage for visitors and community alike.
