James May Reflects on the Future of His Partnership with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond

James May has opened up about the future of his on-screen collaboration with longtime colleagues Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. The trio entertained audiences for over two decades, first with 15 years on the BBC’s Top Gear, followed by eight successful years on Amazon Prime’s The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour wrapped up in 2024 with the special finale, One For The Road. At the time, the team explained the decision to end the show was motivated by a desire not to overextend their run after fully exploring the format. Jeremy, Richard, and James all agreed it was important to conclude while the series still held strong appeal.

Speaking recently on LBC, 63-year-old James was candid about whether fans might see the trio reunited on screen. He confirmed the production company behind The Grand Tour shut down last year and said, “You should never say never should you because then somebody will dig it up and hold it against you, but there is nothing planned.”

He admitted it was “slightly difficult” to imagine the three presenters returning as “we’re knocking on a bit,” adding, “There comes a point where you should let things lie.” James reflected on the importance of leaving audiences wanting more rather than risking a decline in quality, joking that their biggest challenge was to “land it safely and not fly it into the cliffs.”

Since the show’s finale, the presenters have pursued separate ventures. Jeremy Clarkson has embraced farming and is enjoying success with Clarkson’s Farm, now in its fifth series, which chronicles his life managing Diddly Squat Farm alongside his team.

Richard Hammond has concentrated on his classic car restoration business, The Smallest Cog, while maintaining a strong presence on DriveTribe, producing content like reviews, workshop videos, and challenges on YouTube. He also made a cameo appearance in Clarkson’s Farm Season 4.

James May has explored travel programming with James May: Our Man In…, which ran until 2024, and hosted Amazon’s culinary show Oh Cook! for two series. Beyond television, James has expanded his brand with ventures such as James Gin and continues to create digital content on his YouTube channel.

While fans may hope for a reunion, James May’s comments suggest that the iconic trio may have gracefully closed this chapter, leaving behind an impressive legacy in motoring entertainment.
