James May has opened up about the possibility of reuniting on screen with his long-time co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. The trio formed a powerful television partnership lasting 23 years, including 15 years on the BBC’s Top Gear and eight more on Amazon Prime’s The Grand Tour.
The Grand Tour ended in 2024 after six critically acclaimed series and a final special, One For The Road. At the time, James explained the group had “exhausted” the show’s potential and didn’t want to “overstay their welcome.” Jeremy and Richard shared this sentiment, emphasizing their wish to conclude while the series remained popular.
Speaking on LBC, the 63-year-old presenter addressed whether the iconic partnership might return. He confirmed that the production company behind The Grand Tour closed last year and remarked on a reunion: “You should never say never because then somebody will hold it against you, but there is nothing planned.”

James also expressed some hesitation about revisiting the past, stating it felt “slightly difficult” to “envisage” the trio coming back, admitting, “we’re knocking on a bit.” He reflected on the importance of leaving the audience wanting more and said, “we always used to say, partly in jest but actually genuinely, the hardest thing was to land the show safely without crashing it. I think we managed that. But if you keep going too long, you eventually fly into the cliff.”
Since The Grand Tour’s conclusion, each presenter has pursued separate ventures. Jeremy Clarkson has focused on farming with his hit show Clarkson’s Farm, now in its fifth series, showcasing life on Diddly Squat Farm alongside his team and partner Lisa Hogan.
Richard Hammond has grown his classic car restoration business, The Smallest Cog, while continuing to create automotive content on DriveTribe and YouTube. He’s remained active across various motoring and entertainment projects, including a cameo appearance in Clarkson’s Farm Season 4.
James May has ventured into travel programming with James May: Our Man In…, which aired from 2020 to 2024 before ending. He also hosted Amazon’s cooking series Oh Cook!, which ran for two series. Beyond television, James is expanding his ventures such as his James Gin brand and producing regular digital content on his YouTube channel.
Though their legendary partnership has reached its natural conclusion, James May’s candid reflections reveal the deep respect and appreciation the trio share for their time together—and the wisdom in knowing when to step away.
