Alan Davies, the beloved British comedian, actor, and presenter, is set to appear on James Martin’s Saturday Morning show later today. Known widely for his role as the lead in the BBC’s mystery drama Jonathan Creek (1997–2016) and as the only permanent panellist on BBC’s QI since 2003, Alan’s career spans stand-up comedy, acting, and writing. He has also authored three insightful memoirs: My Favourite People and Me (2009), Just Ignore Him (2020), and White Male Stand-Up (2025).
Fans tuning in to James Martin’s ITV programme will also encounter chef Sami Tamimi and gardener David Domoney as James showcases his culinary expertise from his Hampshire kitchen.
While Alan Davies’s professional achievements are well known, many might be surprised to learn about his acclaimed wife, Katie Maskell. Katie is an accomplished author and former literary agent. She studied English and Drama at Warwick University, followed by postgraduate training at East 15 Acting School in London. Katie earned notable recognition when she won Waterstones’ £5,000 Children’s Book Prize in 2010 for her popular novel, The Great Hamster Massacre.

Alan and Katie’s relationship began backstage at a QI recording in 2005, leading to an engagement within six months. They married in 2007, with comedian and Strictly Come Dancing champion Bill Bailey acting as Alan’s best man. The couple have since welcomed three children: Susie (b. 2009), Robert (b. 2011), and Francis (b. 2016).
Alan recently shared the story of their first meeting on The One Show, recalling a moment that nearly derailed their encounter. During a QI stunt involving sugar glass, a fellow comedian threw a glass at Alan that wasn’t actually breakable. Alan spotted Katie in the audience but worried the flying glass could end his career before he could speak to her. Thankfully, the glass shattered harmlessly on the desk, and Alan met Katie afterwards in the green room — she wasn’t wearing glasses and didn’t see his face clearly, much to his relief.
James Martin’s Saturday Morning will air at 9:30 am on ITV1 today (Saturday, 7 March). Fans of Alan Davies can continue to enjoy QI, available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
