James Martin’s Health Journey: From ‘Horrific’ Cancer Battle to Life-Changing Surgery

James Martin is one of the UK’s most recognised television chefs, having built a stellar career over more than three decades. His breakthrough came in 2006 when he began presenting the popular show Saturday Kitchen. Since 2017, he has also hosted Saturday Morning with James Martin and competed in Strictly Come Dancing’s third series, finishing a commendable fourth.

Today, as he celebrates his 54th birthday, James reflects on significant health struggles that have shaped his life beyond the kitchen. Recently, he revealed shedding three stone in weight alongside his fiancée Kim Johnson, marking a fresh chapter after facing a harrowing cancer diagnosis and undergoing major surgery.

In 2017, James was diagnosed with facial cancer. Following surgery in 2018, he endured ongoing treatment before receiving the life-affirming news of being given the all-clear in April 2024. Speaking on the Good Food podcast, he described the journey as “horrific” yet transformative, sharing how the ordeal altered his outlook profoundly. The diagnosis brought intense pain and anxiety, even leading him to contemplate his own funeral during the darkest moments.

Beyond cancer, James underwent refractive lens surgery late last year, dramatically improving his eyesight. This procedure replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one to correct vision problems. The results astonished his colleagues, as his ability to spot fine details from afar sharply improved. In an interview with Prima magazine, he described waking up able to read newspapers without glasses, enjoying what he called “better than 20/20 vision.”

James has also been candid about his adult diagnosis of dyslexia, a condition that went unrecognised during his youth in Yorkshire. Struggling silently, his difficulty reading the autocue prompted testing once he entered television. Reflecting on school days, he recalled numerous red marks from teachers and low expectations for his success. In 2018, he told Woman and Home magazine, “I failed cookery in school because I was dyslexic, still am. Severely dyslexic. I’ve never read a book in my life.”

The demanding hospitality industry, where James has dedicated over 30 years, has also taken its toll physically and mentally. He opened up about experiencing burnout and the challenge of aging, noting, “I can’t bend down as quickly as I used to.” His relentless work ethic once meant going without a day off for three years straight.

A sobering incident finally prompted a shift in priorities. While abroad for a gig, James witnessed a colleague of the same age collapse and die suddenly during an awards ceremony. The shock of that moment led him to reconsider his lifestyle. Speaking on Loose Women, he said, “I got back on the plane and thought ‘now I’m going to redress the balance.’ And now I’m in a great place.”
