James Martin Welcomes Curtis Stone: Chef’s Career, MasterChef Controversy, and Family Life

Curtis Stone, the celebrated Australian chef known for his Michelin-starred restaurants, cookbooks, and television appearances, is set to appear on James Martin’s Saturday Morning show on ITV this 14 March. Joining TV host Jane McDonald and mixologist Merlin Griffiths, Stone offers viewers a deep dive into his successful career and personal life.

Born in Melbourne 50 years ago, Curtis’s passion for cooking began in childhood, inspired by his grandmother Maude. He pursued this passion through a commercial cookery apprenticeship, and at 18, he moved to London to launch his professional career at the prestigious Savoy Hotel. His culinary education continued under the tutelage of famed chef Marco Pierre White at Café Royal and Mirabelle, eventually becoming head chef at White’s Quo Vadis.

Stone’s restaurant ventures showcase his deep family ties. In 2014, he opened Maude in Beverly Hills, named after his grandmother who sparked his love for cooking. The restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2019. His second restaurant, Gwen, named after his maternal grandmother, opened in Hollywood in 2016 and gained a Michelin star six years later.

A familiar face on television, Curtis has appeared on shows including Dinner in a Box, Good Food Live, Saturday Kitchen, and notably, MasterChef Australia. However, his recent stint as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia attracted criticism from some viewers who found his feedback “too harsh” and “unpleasant.” Curtis defended his approach, explaining that his tough mentoring style aims to push contestants to reach their full potential.

In an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle, Curtis elaborated on his evolving judging style throughout the competition’s progression. “You have to be a good mentor… feel out your team… know how much pressure to apply,” he said. He added that his contestants ultimately appreciated the challenge and the growth it inspired.

Beyond the kitchen, Curtis shares a fulfilling personal life with his wife, American actress Lindsay Price. The couple met on a blind date in 2009, got engaged three years later, and married in June 2013. They are proud parents of two sons, Hudson and Emerson. Curtis often shares joyous family moments on his Instagram, including celebrations like Lindsay’s birthday in Mexico.
