James Martin, the beloved British chef known for his charming presence on Saturday Kitchen, This Morning, and The One Show, recently opened up about a deeply personal and emotional moment from his childhood.
At 53, Martin is a familiar face on British television, but his journey to culinary fame was fueled by a humble and touching gift from his grandmother that planted a lasting dream. Speaking on Greatest Hits Radio, Martin revealed how a miniature Ferrari toy sparked a passion he never imagined would come true.
He recounted a family holiday when he was around 12 years old, traveling along Yorkshire’s picturesque Hole of Horcum—a large, natural valley between Pickering and Whitby famous for its steam train route. While on this trip, his grandmother bought him a small toy Ferrari, a treasure he still keeps in his garage today.

Martin nostalgically explained how the first song he ever played while driving his actual sports car years later was a Bryan Adams classic from 1984—the same era as his childhood holiday memories. The tune, played on an old stereo in his first car, symbolized the fulfillment of a dream he thought might never come true.
“I never thought it would happen,” Martin admitted, reflecting on how dreams born in childhood can manifest in remarkable ways.
In a related note, guests from the farming community who have appeared on Martin’s show recently shared insights into his professional demeanor in the kitchen. Robert and David Nicholson, known from Springtime on the Farm and The Yorkshire Vet, described James’s no-nonsense cooking philosophy emphasizing focus and flow in the culinary process.
David recalled meeting Martin during a barbecue segment on the show, where Robert emphasized that once Martin began cooking, interruptions were not welcome. “It was going to flow from there, and we were going to make it work,” Robert explained, praising Martin’s dedication to perfect timing and precision in the kitchen.
Fans can catch James Martin on his flagship show, James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen, airing on ITV today, April 11, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, featuring guests including Strictly professional dancers Carlos Gu and Amy Dowden.
