James Martin Recalls Childhood Holiday That Inspired Dream Fulfilled on Yorkshire Roads

Celebrity chef James Martin has opened up about a deeply emotional childhood memory that fueled a lifelong dream he once believed was impossible to achieve.

Now 53, James is one of Britain’s most beloved culinary personalities, famed for hosting Saturday Kitchen and featuring on shows like This Morning and The One Show. Yet, his journey to fame and success began with a humble gift that left a lasting impression.

In an interview with Greatest Hits Radio, James revealed how a toy Ferrari his grandmother bought him sparked a fascination that stayed with him well into adulthood. The cherished miniature car now sits in his garage, symbolizing a dream that came true years later.

He recounted a family holiday at the age of 12, traveling along a scenic stretch of Yorkshire road called the Hole of Horcum, which connects Pickering to Whitby. It was during this trip that his grandmother purchased the toy Ferrari from a local shop.

James fondly described the Hole of Horcum—a picturesque location where a historic steam train passes through—and recalled his childhood wonder: “When I was about 12 years old we went on holiday to the River Thames, because that’s as far as we got on holiday. We stopped at this toy shop and my grandmother bought me a little Ferrari. I have that Ferrari in my garage now, and when I was 27, the first thing I wanted to do was drive that road in the real car.”

Adding a nostalgic touch, he shared that the first song he ever played in his Ferrari was a classic by Bryan Adams, linking the music to the memories of that special family trip.

This touching story shines a light on the humble beginnings of a chef who has become an iconic figure in the culinary world.

In related news, two guests from James Martin’s recent show, farming brothers Robert and David Nicholson, revealed the strict discipline James demands when cooking on his programme. Known from Springtime on the Farm and The Yorkshire Vet, the brothers described James’s focus during a barbecue segment.

Robert explained, “Once he started cooking, he didn’t want any interruptions. It was full flow—no stopping, no starting back again.” David added, “He was clear about the idea of the dish, and once cooking began, it was about making it work without pausing for anything.”

Fans can catch James in action on James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen, airing on ITV from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on April 11, featuring Strictly Come Dancing professionals Carlos Gu and Amy Dowden as guests.
