James Martin Opens Up About Beloved Mum’s Wish and His Unfulfilled Dream

James Martin, the beloved television chef, recently shared a touching insight into a special wish his mother holds for him—one he has yet to fulfill. During his ITV Saturday Morning programme on December 13, James cooked alongside chefs Monica Galetti and Atul Kochhar, showcasing seasonal dishes and sharing stories.

As the show unfolded, James engaged in a conversation with former rugby star Matt Dawson, who spoke fondly of the BBC quiz show A Question of Sport. Matt revealed how his mother encouraged him to appear on the show before considering himself a true success.

James responded by comparing his own mother’s perspective, saying, “My mum’s the same but it’s Coronation Street.” Sadly, James admitted he has never appeared on the iconic ITV soap opera that his mother deems a milestone. “She said, ‘You haven’t made it until you’re on Coronation Street,’” he recalled.

This candid moment is just one example of James opening up about his family. Earlier this year, he shared memories of his grandmother, Marjorie, who was a devoted fan of his television appearances—especially Strictly. James fondly remembers how much it saddened him that his grandmother did not live to see him compete on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005.

James credits his grandmother as a key inspiration for his culinary journey, recalling childhood visits to his grandparents' allotment where he first experienced fresh, homegrown produce. He described how their support encouraged him to pursue cooking, eventually leading him to work in a local kitchen before attending catering college. “My grandmother was a huge influence in my life and inadvertently inspired me to be a chef,” he reflected.

Fans can catch James Martin’s Saturday Morning show every Saturday at 9:30 am on ITV1, where he continues to share his culinary passion and heartfelt stories.
