Celebrity chef James Martin, famously known for hosting ITV’s Saturday Morning, has shared his straightforward approach to exercise that has helped him maintain a remarkable three-stone weight loss. Ahead of welcoming TV presenter Guy Martin to his show this weekend, James opened up about his routine, which contrasts sharply with traditional gym workouts.
Once joking about being perceived as “chunky” and recalling a viewer’s cheeky comment—“you don’t look as fat as you do on TV”—James transformed his health dramatically. After competing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005, he dropped his weight from 17 stone to 14 stone. This milestone marked the beginning of his committed shift towards healthier eating and physical activity.
Before his change, James’ diet was far from ideal, featuring road snacks and indulgences like Mars bars, pizzas, and takeaways. Although he initially cut out chocolate completely, he later allowed himself small amounts. Today, about 80% of his meals focus on fish, frequently cooked with butter, reflecting a balanced and sustainable diet.

James candidly revealed to Best magazine his main form of daily exercise: walking. “I have a gym upstairs, but I haven’t used it,” he admitted. “I do about 20,000 to 30,000 steps a day walking my dogs.” This simple habit is the cornerstone of his fitness routine.
Health experts, including the NHS, recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly, with brisk walking endorsed as an accessible exercise that improves stamina, burns calories, and supports cardiovascular health. James’ approach aligns perfectly with these guidelines.
Beyond fitness, James’ motivation is practical. An avid car racer, he finds maintaining a healthy weight essential to comfortably getting in and out of his racing cars. On the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast, he humorously described the struggle: “Getting in, you kind of fall in them, but then you’ve got to get out of them and it just doesn’t look very good.” For him, keeping fit is less about the gym and more about everyday functionality.
While James has embraced his slimmer physique, he admits to feeling “ill at ease” with fans calling him a “sex symbol.” Currently, he is dating personal trainer Kim Johnson, 39, who sparked engagement rumors by referring to James as her “fiancé” on social media earlier this year. Kim also proudly shared a dish created by James, underscoring their shared passion for food and health.
James Martin’s story highlights how consistency in simple lifestyle changes, rather than rigorous gym sessions, can lead to lasting weight loss and improved wellness.
