Ruth Jones has confirmed that the beloved British comedy series Gavin and Stacey will not be returning to television, describing her co-creator and co-star James Corden as her “annoying younger brother.”
On Sunday, May 11, Jones was honored with the BAFTA for Female Performance in a Comedy for her role as Nessa in Gavin and Stacey: The Finale. The award-winning actress revisited her iconic character one final time, delivering a standout performance that delighted fans.
Jones and Corden originally co-wrote and starred in the hit BBC series from 2007 to 2010. The show later returned for a Christmas special in 2019 and culminated with a finale episode in 2024. The final episode was a massive success, drawing an impressive 12.3 million viewers on Christmas Day last year—surpassing the 11.9 million who tuned in for the 2019 special.

Despite the enthusiastic response, Jones has made it clear that there will be no further episodes or series of Gavin and Stacey. Speaking in the BAFTA winners' room, she explained, “You don’t really want to see Smithy and Nessa in that domestic set-up. The whole joy of them was that kind of ‘will they, won’t they?’ dynamic. Do you really want to see Nessa and Smithy talking about putting the bins out? Probably not.”
The day following her BAFTA win, Jones elaborated on her relationship with Corden during an interview on BBC Radio 4. She affectionately described him as her “annoying, younger brother” and herself as his “very bossy older sister,” highlighting the playful dynamic that fuels their creative partnership.
Looking ahead, Jones expressed optimism about collaborating with Corden again but on new projects. “We have such a good laugh together and love being in a room writing. I hope that will continue because Gavin and Stacey is now finished,” she said. While she couldn’t reveal details, Jones assured fans that she and Corden are likely to develop fresh ideas together in the future.
