Jack Smith ended the season on a high before his summer holiday in Portugal, scoring an impressive goal for Slimbridge in their friendly match against League Two side Cheltenham Town.
The 21-year-old, a former Bristol Rovers youth player, showcased his skill and composure during the encounter, notably netting a well-placed shot into the bottom left corner shortly after the hour mark to make the score 3-1. His strike followed George Miller’s early opener for Cheltenham and Charlie McCann’s two goals prior to half-time.
Despite the 6-1 defeat in front of 463 supporters, Smith’s performance stood out, especially as the Southern League Swans faced strong opposition. Slimbridge’s young Under-18 goalkeeper Sam Hart was called into action at short notice, substituting in after originally planning to play cricket for Eastcombe.

Joint manager Tom Deakin demonstrated dedication by staying overnight at Thornhill Park to ensure the pitch remained playable, adjusting the sprinklers regularly to combat the dry conditions.
Speaking from Albufeira, Smith reflected on the match: “It was tough and a good workout because Cheltenham’s quality showed. I was happy with my goal and thought I took it well.”
He singled out Cheltenham defender George Nurse for his quality on the ball, noting Nurse’s shift from centre-half to left-back during the game. “George Nurse was really good. You could see his quality straight away and he was one of the players who stood out,” Smith added.
Smith’s football journey began at Bristol Rovers, where he played from the age of six until he was sixteen. He later joined Slimbridge and gained valuable senior experience during a loan spell at Thornbury Town under Richard Joyce in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
After an impressive season with 31 goals that drew interest from several clubs, Smith has chosen to remain loyal to Slimbridge, who recently secured promotion back to the Southern League by winning the Hellenic League title.
“I have always lived in Slimbridge and have contacts with Deaks and the club, so it was an easy decision to sign for them,” Smith said. “Playing under Joycie was good because he gave me the opportunity to really start my senior non-league career.”
Looking ahead to the new campaign, Smith is focused on team and personal progress: “My aim for this season is to push for a top-half finish with Slimbridge and individually, prove what I can do at this level. My career goal is to play as high as possible. As a group, I feel we are growing into pre-season, learning and bonding because we have new faces.”
Slimbridge joint manager Michael Palmer praised Smith as a key asset for the club. “There was plenty of interest in him over the summer, which speaks volumes about his quality and the reputation he’s building. Since I joined the club alongside Tom last season, Jack has been exceptional. His performances on the pitch have been outstanding.”
Palmer also highlighted Smith’s character and professionalism: “He’s a brilliant character in the dressing room, works hard and embodies everything we want this football club to be about. Not only is he an excellent footballer, but he’s also a genuinely great lad. The same can be said of his family, who have been hugely supportive of both him and the club.”
“We’re excited to continue working with Jack as we prepare for our season at Step 4. We know he’ll play a huge part in what we’re trying to achieve as a team, and we’re equally committed to helping him continue developing as a player.
“We have no doubt he’ll attract even more interest in the future because it’s thoroughly deserved, but for now we’re just delighted he’ll be wearing a Slimbridge shirt again this season.”
