Sourdough bread has become a daily staple in my home. While I occasionally bake my own using a homemade starter, the convenience of picking up a ready-made loaf during my weekly shop is unbeatable.
Its growing popularity is well-earned, with many praising sourdough for being easier to digest, more nutritious, and having a lower glycaemic index compared to regular bread.
However, with the increasing variety of sourdough options on supermarket shelves, choosing the perfect loaf can be overwhelming.

After extensive taste tests over the past few months, one supermarket loaf has consistently stood out: the San Francisco Style Sourdough from Marks & Spencer.
Described as embodying “the iconic tangy taste and chewy texture the city is famous for,” this loaf is crafted using traditional methods and a unique starter. It boasts a crisp crust and a soft, airy interior that keeps fresh for days when stored properly.
Compared to other popular brands, like Jason’s Sourdough White loaf, M&S’s version is noticeably softer with a milder tang—qualities I especially appreciate. Its crumb and crust are less dense and chewy, and it freezes well, making it convenient for future use.
Depending on the store, the loaf is sometimes pre-sliced, or I slice it myself at home. While it is slightly pricier than some alternatives, its consistent quality, subtle sourdough flavor, and availability make it well worth it. I never tire of this loaf, so none of it ever goes to waste.
The loaf is exceptional when toasted with butter and shines even more in toasties, achieving a perfect golden crunch that’s hard to beat.
Having tried numerous sourdough loaves over the years—including those from Tesco’s in-store bakery—M&S’s San Francisco Style Sourdough remains my top choice for quality, flavor, and texture.
