During ITV’s live coverage of Cheltenham Festival’s Gold Cup day, presenter Ed Chamberlin was compelled to apologize after audible swearing and inappropriate gestures occurred in the background.
The incident happened while Oli Bell was interviewing Tuesday’s ITV7 winner, Paul from Preston. As the offensive language was briefly picked up on air, Chamberlin quickly addressed the situation once the broadcast returned to the main desk.
He remarked, “It could be a long afternoon for you as well, Oli. Apologies if you picked up any language there, there was one gesture as well. You can’t keep away the idiots sometimes on live television.”

The focus soon shifted back to the day’s racing action, beginning with the JCB Triumph Hurdle at 1:20 pm. The highlight of the afternoon was the fiercely competitive Gold Cup race, featuring notable contenders such as The Jukebox Man, Gaelic Warrior, Jango Baie, and the defending champion Inothewayurthinkin.
However, some contenders faced withdrawal due to ground conditions; notably, Spillane’s Tower pulled out of the Gold Cup, and Diva Luna missed the 2:40 pm Mares' Chase.
The Jukebox Man drew additional interest, particularly from football fans, due to its ownership by Harry Redknapp. Esteemed former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is part of the syndicate owning L’Eau du Sud and Regents Stroll, has seen significant returns, with earlier races yielding prize money and notable finishes.
Earlier in the week, Il Ridoto and Kim Muir were unable to complete their races, although Maestro Conti achieved a respectable second-place finish, adding to the syndicate’s tax-free earnings.
The opening race at 1:20 pm brought a surprise victory as Apolon De Charnie, a 50/1 outsider trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Patrick Mullins, narrowly defeated market favorite Minella Study, kicking off day four of the festival with excitement.
