After years of unwavering dedication to Cheltenham, Dave Bath has been bestowed with the Freedom of the Borough— the town’s highest civic honour recognizing outstanding service and exceptional contributions to the community.
The award was presented during the 2026 Cheltenham Mayor Making Ceremony and Annual Inauguration held at the Town Hall on May 18th, in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. The event also featured performances from local dancers and singers, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
“I was so shocked. I never expected it!" said the 52-year-old Dave. “I received a phone call just before the event informing me, and I kept saying thank you. I couldn’t tell anyone until it was official—it was truly a surreal moment.”

Originally from Staffordshire, Dave has called Cheltenham home for nearly 28 years. Over the last 15 years, he has volunteered tirelessly with Cheltenham Saracens FC. Beyond football, he has led community food initiatives and organised the highly successful Cheltenham Community Christmas Selection Box Appeal and Easter Egg Appeal, bringing joy to many underprivileged families year after year.
In 2024, Dave’s efforts were also recognised with the Cheltenham Medal of Honour.
“What drives me in my volunteering is knowing that people accept me, understand my past and my mental health journey,” Dave shared. “I started volunteering to reconnect with the community. Some days are still hard, but I’m grateful for friends like Marisa Regan, Gary Goodhall, and Ross Beamish from the Cheltenham Round Table who are always there when I need them.”
Dave also expressed his gratitude to Graham Roberts, Brian Dix, and Chris Hawkins from Saracens, and to Sara-Louise Ackrill, who encouraged him out of isolation and into volunteering.
Alongside Dave, two other recipients received the Freedom of the Borough honour: Clare Seed for her work with Public Hearts CIC, and Steve Cotterill for his accomplishments as manager of Cheltenham Town FC.
“This award isn’t just mine—it belongs to everyone who donates and supports the appeals. Without them, none of this would be possible,” Dave said.
He remains optimistic about Cheltenham’s future. “The town is moving in the right direction. There are so many groups needing volunteers right now, so if you have the chance, please get involved.”
Currently focused on supporting the Saracens, Dave is taking each day as it comes. “It would be incredible to see our appeals expand across Gloucestershire and nearby areas like Tewkesbury. The smiles on the kids’ faces make it all worthwhile. Cheltenham truly is filled with caring people.”
