‘It Means Everything’ - Cheltenham Town Boss Steve Cotterill Reflects After 4-0 Victory at Walsall

Steve Cotterill was full of praise for his Cheltenham Town squad following their emphatic 4-0 win at Walsall, a result that secured the club’s Football League status with five games to spare.

Reflecting on the match, Cotterill highlighted the team’s patient and composed approach. “We played well in the first half but had to remind the boys to stay calm and not get agitated with each other over fine moments,” he said. “Sometimes you have to appreciate the opposition’s effort with blocks and tackles. Our performance was strong throughout, but the goals came when we remained patient and stuck to the philosophy I brought here.”

He also acknowledged Walsall as a good side who could still make the playoffs, showing respect despite the dominant win.

Cotterill praised individual contributions, such as Harry Ashfield’s opener from a set-piece training move and Isaac Hutchinson’s brilliant run and finish. He noted the team’s effective passing and ability to break lines, even when pressed aggressively in challenging conditions.

Securing EFL safety with games to spare was a proud moment for the manager. “This was why I came back—to put my all into making sure we stay in the league. It’s huge for the club emotionally and professionally,” Cotterill shared. He emphasized the unity in the dressing room and the strong bond with supporters, whom he described as “a big family” and “magnificent.”

Looking back on his career, Cotterill considers this achievement one of his most significant. “You always say the last achievement is your best, and this will stand among my proudest moments,” he said. He credited the hard work on the training ground and the resilience of his players, many of whom have played under pressure and stress throughout the season.

When asked what he wanted to give the players upon his arrival, Cotterill stressed the importance of experience, trust, and loyalty. “I’ve managed for over 30 years, experienced the good, the bad, and the indifferent. Passing that knowledge on has helped the players grow. Protecting the dressing room and keeping it tight has earned me their trust.”

He expressed gratitude to the media for their support and understanding, even when asking challenging questions.

As the season approaches its final stretch, Cotterill remains focused on finishing strongly. He admitted they won’t win every game or play at this level every time but hopes for enough energy and support from fans to maintain the momentum.

The victory also allowed valuable minutes for squad players like George Miller and George Nurse, the latter still working his way back to full match fitness after a long layoff. Cotterill explained the careful management of Nurse’s return to balance strength and running capacity.

Reflecting on the 27 years since he first brought Cheltenham Town into the English Football League, Cotterill emotionally summed up the importance of today’s success. “I can’t tell you how much this means to me, my family, and everyone in Cheltenham. It means everything.”
