Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage highlighted the clean sheet as the standout positive following his team’s 2-0 win against Wealdstone on Saturday.
Neil Kengni and Gabe Kircough scored just before and after halftime respectively, guiding Rovers to a comfortable victory over a Wealdstone side that entered the match third in the form table. This win was particularly sweet for Savage’s team, as they had not managed to defeat Wealdstone in their two previous meetings this season.
Kengni opened the scoring five minutes before halftime, demonstrating his electric play throughout the first half. After goalkeeper Harry Isted launched a long ball, it bounced over the Wealdstone defense, allowing Kengni to apply a precise finish from the left wing.

Savage explained the tactical adjustments that facilitated Kengni’s breakthrough: “We reviewed their corner setups and noticed too many players marking Harry, so we left three players up front. Kengni was constantly advancing down the left. Originally a right winger at Marine, I transitioned him to left back at Rovers, but his striker instincts really shone today. His work ethic and attitude—always smiling, never sulking or injured—truly embody what I expect.”
Shortly after the hour mark, Kircough extended the lead. A free kick from McAllister was headed back across goal by Laurent Mendy, and Kircough rose to head it home from close range. Savage was full of praise for the substitute: “Gabe stepped in at the last moment and delivered a fantastic performance. It shows how much football changes—just weeks ago, neither Kircough nor Kengni were in the starting lineup, and now both have scored.”
Savage also revealed his tactical shift to a 3-4-2-1 formation, incorporating two attacking midfielders to bridge the gap between midfield and striker—a problem the team had encountered recently.
“The 4-2-3-1 served us brilliantly early in the season, but away from home, we needed a more secure, flexible platform with better overloads. The two attacking midfielders caused confusion for their centre-half,” Savage said.
He concluded by emphasizing the value of the clean sheet: “The back three performed well, and finding solutions is what I’m about. I was once told I wasn’t good enough as a player, and now as a manager, I’m always looking to overcome challenges.”
