Drivers on the A46 Shurdington Road near Cheltenham are facing significant disruption this week as a crucial junction closes for essential works. Severn Trent has shut a section of Kidnappers Lane starting Monday, July 21, with the closure expected to last until Friday.
This junction, located close to the Miller Homes development where 350 new properties are under construction, has already seen extensive roadworks recently. The current closure is to allow Severn Trent to install a new water main to serve the upcoming Greenway Chase estate.
Motorists are being redirected onto a 2.5-mile detour through the often congested Church Road, Leckhampton Road, and Shurdington Road. On Monday morning, several drivers were seen ignoring the ‘road closed’ sign on Kidnappers Lane, only to be forced into U-turns upon encountering physical barriers.

Prior to starting the works, Severn Trent notified local residents: “We plan to install a new water main connecting to our existing supply outside the site, commencing July 21 for approximately five days. To complete this work safely and efficiently, a road closure will be in place. Emergency services will maintain access from either side of the work area. Please note, there will be no through road access, but a clearly signposted diversion will guide motorists for everyone’s safety.”
Importantly, Severn Trent assures residents that water supply will not be interrupted during the construction period.
